Broccoli Bunch–Throat Ripper partnership

Cinnamon Bun

Broccoli Bunch–Throat Ripper partnership is defined by a rescue mission that turns an encounter with Gunther’s undead companion into active mutual reliance. Throat Ripper carries Broccoli Bunch through the marsh, tracks the cervid kidnappers, protects the vulnerable adventurer with overwhelming force, and remains beside him when the consequences of that force become emotionally unbearable. The partnership therefore operates on two levels: Throat Ripper is an extraordinarily effective hunting and combat ally, but he is also the silent presence that helps Broccoli Bunch continue when courage, movement, and moral certainty all begin to fail.

Formation Through Gunther’s Aid

Throat Ripper enters the relationship as Gunther’s “big, rather silly bone doggy,” a skeletal animal whose appearance changes dramatically before the rescue. Gunther equips him with thick padded armor, a crocodile-like scaly hide, a helmet that leaves only the burning embers of his eyes visible, and bony spikes along his sides, back, and haunches. The armor includes handholds and a saddle, transforming a seemingly comic undead dog into a practical rescue mount without erasing his familiar canine qualities.

The immediate purpose of the partnership is the recovery of Amaryllis. Gunther urges Broccoli Bunch to save his friend and tells him that gratitude can wait. Broccoli Bunch answers that imperative by mounting Throat Ripper as the dog bounds from Gunther’s house, gripping the armor’s spikes and calling for them to go save Amaryllis. The scene establishes the relationship through shared direction rather than formal agreement: Broccoli Bunch supplies the urgent objective, while Throat Ripper supplies the speed and strength needed to pursue it.

Tracking the Kidnappers

Throat Ripper proves useful before the confrontation begins. At the bridge where Amaryllis was taken, he crosses the river and circles with his nose close to the ground. Broccoli Bunch is puzzled that a skeleton without a visible nose can follow a scent, but Throat Ripper’s lack of ordinary anatomy does not prevent him from performing the role of tracker. When the trail seems uncertain, he instead detects it through the marsh and moves from one small island to the next with a growl that vibrates through Broccoli Bunch’s body.

The dog’s tracking leads them away from the road and toward physical signs of the cervid party: hoofprints in the wet soil, bushes cut apart unnaturally, and disturbed patches of ground. When distant voices confirm that the pursuers are close, Broccoli Bunch asks Throat Ripper and the other skeletons to hide while he scouts ahead. Throat Ripper understands enough to nod and wait, showing that the partnership is not simply a matter of carrying a rider. He can respond to Broccoli Bunch’s tactical requests and accept a temporary separation when concealment is more important than immediate force.

Violence and Protection

The rescue’s balance changes when the kidnappers threaten Broccoli Bunch. Throat Ripper answers their taunting with a sound deep in his bones that shakes the air and makes breathing difficult, then releases a roar so fearsome that Broccoli Bunch’s soul is shaken. The roar functions as both intimidation and intervention: it announces the hidden ally before the enemy can control the encounter, and it converts Throat Ripper from tracker into protector.

The attack ends with Throat Ripper and the skeletons killing Titan and Rex, identified as a level-twelve Wind Runner with a level-four Wind Tear and a level-ten Flaming Lancer. The system grants Broccoli Bunch experience for killing people above his level while reducing the reward because he was not the primary combatant. That mechanical wording clarifies the division of labor: Throat Ripper performs the decisive violence, but Broccoli Bunch remains implicated in the result because the rescue mission and pursuit are his actions.

The consequence is not triumph for Broccoli Bunch. He immediately recognizes that Titan and Rex will not return to their families or friends and understands them as two people whose lives he helped take away. His distress becomes physical, with difficulty breathing and a heart that seems unable to settle. At that moment, Throat Ripper places his nose beside Broccoli Bunch and radiates concern despite having no ordinary eyes. The gesture is small, wordless, and crucial. Throat Ripper does not explain the killing or argue that it was justified; he simply notices Broccoli Bunch’s collapse and remains present until the rescue can continue.

Moral Injury and Shared Advance

After the deaths, Broccoli Bunch asks to move forward more slowly, wanting to speak for himself if the cervid group can still be reached. He considers negotiation, apology, and even offering apologies to the dead men’s friends. Throat Ripper does not understand every part of the request, yet he understands that Broccoli Bunch wants to set the pace. The skeletons advance behind them in a wedge, giving the enemy time to prepare while giving Broccoli Bunch time to breathe and bury, temporarily, what he believes he has caused.

This is the partnership’s deepest contrast. Throat Ripper treats the rescue as a clear task: locate the abductors, overcome the threat, and bring Broccoli Bunch to Amaryllis. Broccoli Bunch cannot preserve that clarity after the system names the dead. He mourns two men whose names he knows but whose faces remain unknown, while Throat Ripper’s concern keeps him connected to the living obligation to save Amaryllis. The dog’s loyalty does not remove Broccoli Bunch’s moral injury, but it prevents guilt from stopping the mission.

When Broccoli Bunch finally tells Amaryllis that he killed people, he is still struggling to regard himself as undeserving of comfort. Amaryllis argues that Titan and Rex were mercenaries who had tried to kidnap her and that removing them was the practical destruction of a threat. Broccoli Bunch rejects that justification, insisting that killing people is wrong regardless of their conduct. Her response is not a rejection of his conscience. She calls him an idiot for compromising himself for someone like her, then hugs him, and the embrace helps him function even though he expects a fuller grief later.

Throat Ripper’s contribution to this moral crisis is indirect but essential. His force makes the rescue possible, while his physical concern gives Broccoli Bunch a form of companionship that does not demand an argument. The dog cannot settle the conflict between self-defense and absolute opposition to killing. Instead, he embodies the partnership’s practical promise: Broccoli Bunch does not have to face danger, pursuit, or the aftermath entirely alone.

Farewell and Narrative Significance

Once the immediate rescue is over, Broccoli Bunch thanks Gunther and Throat Ripper. Throat Ripper lies on his side, appearing asleep—or merely more dead—until one eye begins to glow when Broccoli Bunch pats him. His tail answers with a steady thump-a-thump, and Broccoli Bunch responds with extra pats. The exchange preserves the dog’s comic animal identity alongside his frightening battlefield power. He is an armored undead combatant, but he is also a companion who accepts affection through the unmistakable language of a wagging tail.

Broccoli Bunch’s farewell places Throat Ripper within a continuing network rather than treating him as a disposable rescue tool. He wishes Throat Ripper safety and the world’s protection, while Gunther offers Broccoli Bunch good luck and predicts that they will meet again. The possibility of another meeting leaves the partnership open-ended, but its decisive function has already been established. Throat Ripper turns Broccoli Bunch’s determination into mobility, translates danger into protection, and stays close enough to register the adventurer’s suffering after violence.

The relationship’s significance lies in its ethical asymmetry. Broccoli Bunch is a support-oriented Cinnamon Bun whose self-conception centers on friendship, purity, and cleansing the world of impurities in the name of love and justice. Throat Ripper is a skeletal dog whose armor, roar, and attacks belong to a far harsher vocabulary. Together they expose the limits of Broccoli Bunch’s idealism without making that idealism meaningless. Throat Ripper can kill the people blocking the rescue; Broccoli Bunch must still remember them as people. Their partnership holds both facts at once: survival may require force, and force may leave a wound even when used to save a friend.
